LAS VEGAS (May 3, 2016) – The Public Education Foundation honored Las Vegas Academy of the Arts English teacher Stacey Johnston with the Myra Greenspun Teacher Excellence Award on Tuesday.
The award, which was established in 2008 by community leader Myra Greenspun, recognizes an exemplary public school teacher who is successful in using innovative teaching strategies and raising student achievement. It is designed to honor great teachers, to stimulate the sharing of innovative ideas and programs among educators, and to encourage schools to value their own great teachers.
Johnston was nominated by Las Vegas Academy Principal Scott Walker. In his nominating letter, Walker described Johnston’s passion, enthusiasm and devotion to excellence, whether it is helping students academically or mentoring new teachers so they succeed.
Walker noted that the “climate of her classroom is one where kids feel important and supported. Mrs. Johnston pushes all of her students, regardless of their ability. Her high standards encourage her students to see themselves as thinkers and scholars that will settle for nothing less than success.”
“Student interest and learning stems from the leader in the classroom – the teacher – and I feel fortunate to gift this award to such a deserving teacher this year,” said Greenspun, who presented the award to Johnston in a surprise ceremony at Las Vegas Academy. “Her commitment to excellence continues to leave an enduring impact on the lives of students and educators,” said Judi Steele, President & CEO of The Public Education Foundation.
Johnston will receive $3,000 to be used for her classroom, school or professional development. She also will receive an honorarium of $1,000 and 500 points to The Public Education Foundation’s Teacher EXCHANGE®, a resource center for Clark County School District educators.
