About the Plate

Your Driving Education license plate benefits the Public Education Foundation’s programs to support public school students, educators, and families in the state of Nevada, including:

  • Providing $4 million in college scholarships each year to help students pursue their dreams of attending college or vocational school.

  • Providing school supplies to teachers to reduce their out-of-pocket expenses. These supplies are then passed along to students who often can’t afford them; and

  • Empowering families with best practices to support their child’s learning at school and develop life skills that help disrupt generational poverty.

In addition, your local school district will receive a portion of the registration fee, based on the zip code on your vehicle’s registration.

Make an appointment at your DMV office. If your vehicle is currently registered in Nevada, bring your old plates to your pre-selected DMV office. If you wish to keep the old plates, you must bring the rear plate and surrender the decal in person. If you choose to keep the same expiration date, they will issue your new plates with a new registration slip and decal. No emission inspection or registration renewal is required. A $5 substitute plate fee will apply in addition to the specialty plate fees listed above.

You have the option of renewing your vehicle registration for a full year. You will need to complete an emission inspection if required and if the last test was completed more than 90 days ago. Your expiration date will change if the current expiration date is more than 35 days away. Credit will be given for the unused portion of your current Nevada registration.

Getting a new car? You can complete the registration process and purchase your Driving Education plate online!

A registration renewal is not required if you are simply changing license plates on the same vehicle and the registration is not due. The DMV will charge a $5 substitute plate fee in addition to the specialty plate fees listed above.
