In this month’s edition of the Public Education Foundation’s On the FastTrack Newsletter, we shine a spotlight on Deborah Robbson, an inspiring educator-in-training whose journey exemplifies determination, passion, and the transformative power of mentorship. Deborah’s experience illustrates the profound impact that educators have on their students and the essential role of support systems in the path to licensure.

A Dream Realized

Deborah’s entry into the district is as remarkable as her enthusiasm for teaching. Starting as a substitute support staff, she quickly found her footing in the educational environment. “I first picked up jobs in the area where I lived and where my kids went to school,” she recalls. It was through her unwavering commitment that a Special Education Instructional Facilitator, Diane Washington, encouraged her to apply for a paraprofessional position. Although her initial job application faced challenges, Deborah’s resilience led her to a fulfilling role as a Resource Aide, eventually becoming a Title 1 Instructional Assistant.

From a young age, Deborah knew teaching was her calling. “I knew that at the early age of 6 or 7, I wanted to become a teacher because I used to play school with my cousins,” she shares. This childhood ambition has blossomed into a reality where she strives to inspire her students daily.

Following in the Footsteps of Her Role Models

Throughout her career, Deborah found inspiration in two exceptional African-American educators at her school: Ms. Brass and Ms. Johnson. Ms. Brass, a seasoned teacher who now serves as the Math Strategies instructor, embodies a genuine love for education that profoundly impacts her students. In contrast, Ms. Johnson represents the passion of younger educators, demonstrating that love for teaching can thrive in any age group. “We need more people like her,” Deborah notes, highlighting the importance of diverse role models in education.

Learning Through the Arts

Deborah resonates deeply with the mission statement of Gilbert Academy of Creative Arts: “The Arts: A Way to Learn, A Way to Live, A Way to Achieve!” To her, this encompasses not just academic success but also personal growth. “We all have a way we learn… don’t let anything hold you back,” she emphasizes, showcasing her belief in the mission’s broader implications for students’ lives.

A Balancing Act

Pursuing her teaching career while balancing personal obligations has not been without challenges for Deborah, especially following the loss of her son. Despite these difficulties, she remains motivated. “It’s been hard… but God kept me,” she reflects. Her perseverance highlights the strength of character that drives her towards her goals.

Resources for Success

Professional development is essential in the education field, and Deborah acknowledges this necessity. “It keeps us informed about the latest education trends,” she states, emphasizing the value of mentorship and peer support. “A good mentor… helps me learn new skills and have confidence with my peers.”

Deborah’s approach to effective teaching centers on understanding diverse learning styles and nurturing relationships with students and families. “Every student can learn and be taught,” she asserts. Her commitment to continual learning and growth in the classroom inspires her peers.

Fueled by Gratitude, Spreading Encouragement

Throughout her journey, Deborah has faced various obstacles, including financial challenges in pursuing her degree. “School can be expensive… while having bills at home has been hard,” she admits. However, her resolve remains unshaken, fueled by the support of her family and mentor.

For those considering a path in education, Deborah advises them to reflect on their motivations: “Make sure you are doing it for all the right reasons and do what you love the most.” It’s a reminder that passion lies at the heart of effective teaching.

In her journey with Teacher FastTrack Recruit, Deborah expresses heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities provided. “I love Teacher FastTrack Recruit because you are taking a chance on me,” she shares. The support and resources from the program have proven invaluable in her pursuit of becoming a licensed educator.
