Education Hero Award

John Guedry, the Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Nevada, has an unwavering dedication to improving the quality of life for Nevadans. A business leader who also is a consensus builder in the community, John has been an advocate of new ideas to foster excellence in public education.

He has nearly three decades of experience in the financial services sector in Nevada, and his lengthy and varied community service is another demonstration of his commitment to Southern Nevada.

John is The Public Education Foundation’s treasurer and a member of its Board of Directors. He also is a board member of Opportunity Village, Women’s Development Center, Las Vegas Bowl and NAOIP. John is past chairman of Leadership Las Vegas Council for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Nevada Bankers Association.

Myron Martin
Champion of Children Award

Myron Martin, the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Smith Center, has been at the forefront of developing a vibrant performing arts community in Southern Nevada. The Smith Center, which opened in 2012, is a world-class performing arts center.

With Martin at the helm, The Smith Center is dedicated to expanding the role of the arts in public schools. The Smith Center, working with the Clark County School District, has hosted close to 200,000 students and teachers for development workshops, student matinees and other education outreach programs.

The Smith Center, together with The Public Education Foundation and CCSD, have supported the “Tribute to the Arts Concert Series” held at Reynolds Hall, which features performances by the best musicians in Southern Nevada, including students, teachers and professionals. The Smith Center continues to work with The Public Education Foundation to explore other partnerships as well.

Lifetime Education Achievement Award

Dr. Beverly Mathis, equipped with boundless energy and spirit, has spent her career ensuring that all children receive a quality education. She started as a teacher in the Clark County School District in 1976. Later she became the principal at Kermit Roosevelt Booker Sr. Elementary School, a post she held for 16 years until her retirement.

Among many recognitions of her commitment to excellence, Beverly was a recipient of the 2000 Milken Family Foundation Education Award, was inducted into CCSD’s Excellence in Education Hall of Fame and was selected in 2010 as School Administrator of the Year by the Nevada Association of School Boards.

Beverly joined The Public Education Foundation in 2011, and currently serves as its Director of Literacy, Leadership and Community Engagement.

Each year, The Public Education Foundation honors unique individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and dedication to children and education by presenting two distinct awards to the heroes amongst us.

The prestigious Education Hero Award recognizes individuals who have made significant civic and charitable contributions impacting public education in Southern Nevada. Each honoree has demonstrated extraordinary concern for our community and our future and is dedicated to the advancement of improved educational opportunities for all. Their steadfast commitment and unwavering service to our children distinguishes them as our "Education Heroes."

Champion of Children
In 2009, the Foundation unveiled a new award category – Champion of Children. This esteemed award is presented to an individual dedicated to supporting children and championing children’s issues nationally and globally. This celebrated honor recognizes a special person whose dedication and passion serves to inspire others to become more involved in shaping our children’s future.

Lifetime Education Achievement Award
The Lifetime Education Achievement Award is presented by The Public Education Foundation to individuals whose lifetime achievements are truly extraordinary. Recipients have given generously and worked tirelessly as advocates for quality public education and greater educational opportunities for all children. This award is bestowed upon special individuals whose dedication and determination serve to inspire each of us to become more involved in shaping our children's future.
