The Foundation Breaks Record

The Public Education Foundation awarded more than $1.3 million through its Scholarship Program to students seeking a post-secondary education Wednesday – its largest amount ever in a single year. There were 660 scholarships awarded, the most in the program’s history, to 450 students.

The Foundation celebrated the achievements of the recipients and honored the contributions of the donors today when it held its Scholarship Recognition Luncheon. The luncheon, which was hosted by Sands Cares, was held at The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino.

The Foundation’s Scholarship Program has witnessed remarkable growth since its first year in 1995, when 19 students received scholarships totaling $16,000. In just over two decades, the Foundation has awarded more than 6,100 scholarships, totaling almost $12 million.

The scholarships are provided by businesses, organizations, families and individuals, and they are based on a variety of criteria such as academic achievement, area of study and/or financial need. The awards range from $500 to $9,000 annually and some are renewable.

“Each year we see a significant increase in the number of students applying for these scholarships,” said Judi Steele, President & CEO of The Public Education Foundation. “We are grateful for the extraordinary generosity of donors willing to invest in our graduates,” Steele added. “These scholarships open the door to advanced learning opportunities for so many of our students.”

Major donors include Sands Cares, NV Energy Foundation, Cox Communications, Junior League of Las Vegas, United Way of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas Hospitality Association, Southern Hills Hospital, Pardee Homes, Southern Nevada International Code Council, Epicurean Charitable Foundation, Nevada Contractors Association and JMA Architecture.
